Payne Elevator Building, Artists’ Housing + Studios

Conversion of the Payne Elevator Company, a turn of the century manufacturing building, provided 18 loft spaces for artists who formed a partnership and purchased the building. The design process was complex and involved the securing of financing for the building improvements and then working with each owner in the design of individual units. The design preserves the exterior facade, as well the existing structural features, including the century-old heavy timber framing, large steel roof trusses, and a skylight system.
