University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth
College of Visual + Performing Arts Master Plan
New Bedford, MA

HKT conducted a feasibility study after the university acquired the the Swain School of Design, along with the Program in Artisanry initially at Boston University. The resulting arts program was proposed to occupy three historic buildings in the center of New Bedford, facilities which totaled 160,000 sf and had originally housed the Southeastern Massachusetts Textile Institute. HKT developed a plan that would join the buildings and create an urban campus, and designed a renovation plan that would accommodate seven art disciplines, galleries, a theater, and recital hall. Our study identified ways in which the buildings could be linked to create a mini-campus that would help upgrade a deteriorating neighborhood.
