Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve
The Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is an organization that conducts estuarine research, provides education to professionals, the general public and children, in addition to being stewards to over 2,300 acres of varying coastal habitat. The headquarter’s property located on northern end of Waquoit Bay serves as the heart of the Reserve providing the multitude of services and research, including housing the main facilities for research, education, administration and visitor’s center. A former estate property which was converted into the Reserves campus, the headquarters site was increasingly becoming outdated and cramped as the organization continued to grow. In the spring of 2010 HKT Architects, Inc was hired to conduct a master plan study to review and document the current and future needs for the Reserve and to outline a thoughtful approach to building towards that future. A thorough programming and information phase conducted with staff resulted in an understanding of where the organization would be in a few years and the master plan reflected that growth.
