+ Overview

Originally planned to house just the Department of Public Works on their existing site, the program was expanded to include the Town’s Facility Department following a decision by the Board of Selectmen. This combined facility includes Public Works administration, engineering, and operations, as well as administrative and operations offices for the Facilities department. Other key elements are the centralizing of bulk storage for the entire Town, secured and run by DPW personnel, a staff lunchroom/training room used as a voting precinct, and the location of a head-end room for Town communications.

The first municipal project under the Town’s sustainable design initiative, the building utilizes sustainable design principles to maximize daylighting, increase indoor air quality, and reduce energy costs. A super insulated envelope, white roof, green roof, and rainwater harvesting help to meet these goals. Sited adjacent to the Minuteman Bikeway and the North Lexington Brook, and located on a busy roadway in a residential neighborhood, the site design features ecological restoration, sustainable stormwater management strategies, and a comprehensive landscape design centered on low maintenance indigenous plants.
